Creating an Alias (shortcut) to a Network Resource on Mac OS X PDF Print E-mail

This article explains how create a shortcut (called an alias on the Mac OS) to a folder or file on a network.

To create a shortcut/alias to a folder on a/the network:

1. Login to the server (Go -> Connect to Server) and select the folder or file on that you wish to create a shortcut to by single-clicking on it.

2. While holding down the Apple/Command and option keys on your keyboard drag and drop the folder or file onto your desktop or wherever you wish to put the shortcut. You should notice a curved arrow while you are dragging if you have the Apple/Command and option keys held down.

(Dragging and dropping is accomplished by holding down your mouse button while dragging and item and then releasing the mouse button to drop the item.)

Be sure to verify that the item that you created a shortcut to is actually a shortcut by verifying that the icon is overlaid with a curved arrow. If you do not see the curved arrow indicating a shortcut on the new icon then you made a copy of the network resource instead of a shortcut to it.

 

Or

To put  shortcut/alias to a mounted share on your dock:

1. First, mount the server in the usual manner (Go -> Connect to Server). (In other words login to the server.)

2. Locate the icon for the mounted share on your Desktop.

3. Drag the icon for the mounted share to the Dock next to the Trash Can.

4. Single-clicking the item in the dock will then mount the server.
