The information in this article is for Gontz Technology Services, LLC web hosting customers. While these instructions may apply to using cPanel in general, they are specifically tailored to Gontz Technology Services, LLC's web hosting accounts. 1. Log in to cPanel by going to your http://yourdomainname.tld/cpanel and entering your account username and password. If you do not know your username and password please send an email to
This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
from the email address that was used to create the account. After logging in you may be prompted with the Welcome New User window. (See below.) You can either click on the x in the upper left corner or click on No, I'm fine. Thanks! to ignore it for now. (Although I do recommend that you take some time to view the video tutorials at some point as they will help you to most efficiently make use of cPanel! They are accessible from within cPanel after you leave this welcome window.) 2. Locate the Files section. (See below. Note: This screenshot is from the X3 theme. If you are using the rvskinlight theme you will not see a section with icons like this. Just look for the Files section.)
3. Locate Legacy File Manager. (Again, this screenshot is from the X3 theme. If you are using the rvskinlight theme just find the words Legacy File Manager under the Files section and click on them.)
*Note: In the future you may determine that using File Manger (as opposed to the Legacy File Manager), Web Disk, or FTP better suits your work flow, but for simplicity purposes I will be explaining how to use the Legacy File Manager in this tutorial.
You may see the Legacy File Manager Directory Selection window. (See below.)
If you see this window you can either setup up the defaults for how Legacy File Manager opens now or do it later by simply clicking on Go.
If you clicked on Go without making any changes in step 3 you will be taken to your home folder. (See below.) Your home folder is a folder that is one level above your web/publicly accessible folder which is called public_html.
4. Navigate to to the location / directory (folder) where you wish to put the uploaded file. To open a directory in the Legacy File Manager you click on the icon (globe) to the left of the name of the directory. (Clicking on the name of the directory will not open it!)
5. Click on Upload files. 6. Click on Browse and in the File Upload window locate the file that you wish to upload.
7. Click on Open.
8. Click on Upload.
9. The file will upload and your will be returned to the folder where the file was uploaded to.
10. The file that you just uploaded may not show up in the file manager until you click on the folder at the end of the line that reads Current Directory: (which is the the folder that you are currently in / the folder where uploaded the file to). For example: In the screenshot below the current directory is called dog_shows. So to reload/refresh the dog_shows folder you would click on it in the above line.
After reloading/refreshing the current folder you should now see the file that was just uploaded.
11. If you are finished uploading files you can now close the tab or window that the file manager opened and you can log out of cPanel by clicking on Logout in the upper right corner. (See below. Again, this screenshot is from the X3 theme but the logout button is also in the upper right corner of the rvskinlight theme. ) Note: If you need to know the full url of the file including your domain name to provide a direct download link from an external source you can find this while in the Legacy File Manager. Simply click on the file name and on the right side in a separate panel you should see URL: http://yourdomainname.tld/path_to_file/filename. Copy and paste this url into your link.
